Getting Collagen-ised!

This month’s WOW Woman is Maria Luba-Muczko from Collagen Colway, one of the UK’s fastest growing direct sales companies. I met Maria at a local networking event and was so inspired with her drive and vision, we hit it off straight away.

I’m a mum of 2 great and talented kids – 24-year old daughter, Olga, and 14-year old son, Greg, both living with me. I have a fabulous and very supportive partner, Michael, also a business person, which makes things so much easier, as we really understand each other. My business Collagen Colway is my true passion and it has grown out of my dreams of independence and flexibility. Being a beginner entrepreneur and a mum does not leave whole lot of space during the day to do other things, but my second passion is NLP and I am committed to developing my skills. It really opens my mind and heart to other people and helps me to understand and communicate with the world and myself(!) at a higher level. I also love travelling and I am happy to explore new places, even round the corner.

So tell me about your business, who/what is Collagen Colway all about? My company Colway UK is a direct sales organisation distributing anti-ageing products. Our main one is pure, natural bioactive Collagen which is a great Polish invention and I am honoured and happy to manage to make the product available in the UK. My business operates globally through a network of independent partners and most of them sell our products on part-time basis, generating a second income stream. But I am really proud my company differs so much from other DS/MLM companies by offering a genuine flexibility, honesty and no hard sale approach.

What inspired you to make the decision to create your own business? It was triggered by a few factors that coincided. First of all, I simply loved Collagen. I was truly impressed with the results on my skin and amazed that such a quality product was not popular in other countries. At that time I was made redundant from the university I had worked for nearly 10 years, still leaving me with some income from the translation agency I was running, but with doubts if I manage to maintain my family. And lastly, I thought I wanted a dramatic change in my life. I was open for new experiences and I really needed some fresh air to breath.

Has there always been a burning desire inside you to create this, or did your business evolve from your original idea? My business reflects my philosophy of life that has always been part of me – flexibility and independence. And I had had it on my mind for a long time, but quite surprisingly, my business happens to be a sales organisation and selling as such is absolutely new to me.

family picWhat did/do you find to be the most challenging part of your business? The very beginning was definitely the most challenging. When I came to the UK 5 years ago, although my head was buzzing with ideas and my motivation was skyrocketing, I only knew one person, my sister, who became my business partner. So, I realised that a good will is not all you need, and I had to get suppliers, legal and accounting services as well as find out about legal requirements, and most importantly, find my first distributors who also believed in me and my new product. Without a network of friends and family it was a really difficult task.

What have you learned about yourself during the process of setting up your business? I have simply discovered a totally new person in me. I have managed to overcome lots of personal limitations, get out of my comfort zone, and push myself to do things that I wouldn’t have been able to do if I hadn’t set up my own business.

What advice would you give someone considering starting their own business? That it will take twice as much time and effort as the person believes, but it will open the whole new world and unblocks their true potential, and this is what life is about.

There is Perfection in This Moment By Sheri Kaye Hoff

I use to worry- a lot.

I would be in bed at night and not sleeping because I would start worrying about the next day, the next week, the next year. I would think thoughts like- if this (fill in the blank) changed, everything would be fine. What I found is that when one situation would be resolved, I still worried. Finally, I realized that I had developed a worrying problem and that even if things were going relatively well, I probably would still worry.

I determined that I did not want to live my life in this way… what worked for me was to find the perfection in the moment. At night, when I would begin worrying, I would stop and say… this moment is perfect. My bed is comfortable, my sheets smell good, my room is relaxing… and I would name everything that was perfect about the moment. Each time that I would slip into worry… I would bring myself back to the moment.

I learned that even in trying times, I could find perfect moments here and there. If I had a big meeting that involved stress- in the car, I would keep my thoughts from worry by bringing myself to the moment. “In this moment, the clouds are beautiful, the car is moving along, I can choose the music I want, I feel my hands on the wheel”, etc

I felt immediate peace and relaxation. The more I practiced being in the moment and feeling the perfection of the moment… the more I felt bliss and joy in every day life.

Perfection in the moment could be a cool hand on a fevered forehead, a cold glass of water soothing a parched throat, deep sobbing that releases emotions- perfection in the moment doesn’t mean that we don’t have ups and downs… it means being present for your life.

Exercise: Take three deep breaths, inhaling and exhaling slowly each time. Describe this present moment… find the perfection in it… Notice how you feel as you bring yourself present.

“3 Marketing Tips for Entrepreneurs” With PJ Van Hulle

It seems obvious that if you want more business, you have to do more marketing, right?  However, when cash is tight, most business owners look for ways to cut costs, and often the first thing to go is money that is being spent on marketing.  Then of course, fewer clients come in, and cash gets even tighter.  This becomes a downward spiral that can take you right out of business if you’re not careful.

I’m NOT suggesting that you have to spend a lot of MONEY on marketing.  Here are 3 tips for attracting more clients that won’t cost you a dime:

Tip #1: Keep it Personal

When you’re having a conversation, writing an e-mail, updating your Facebook page, or standing up and talking about what you do in front of a room full of people, speak directly to one person at a time.

Remember that you may be sending an e-mail to 50 people, but only one person at a time is reading that e-mail.  Instead of writing “you guys” or “Hi everyone,” write as if you’re sending only one e-mail to one specific person.  If you can, use that person’s first name.

When speaking to a group, make eye contact with one person and speak to that person for at least 5 full seconds before you switch to someone else.

When you do this, the people that you’re speaking to or writing to will feel more connected with you at a personal level and therefore will be more likely to refer you or buy your services.

Tip #2: Ask for Referrals

My most effective marketing strategy for the last 9 years has been asking for referrals, especially from strong strategic alliances, people who serve the same target market as I do without being in competition with me.

It takes courage to ask for referrals.  However, people that are referred to you will be more likely to buy your services and usually more pleasant to work with in general.

The easiest way I know to ask for referrals is to call a potential referral partner and talk to them or invite them to lunch.  Here’s a short script you can use (courtesy of Joe Stumpf of By Referral Only):

“I have some time right now to work with two new clients. Before I put an ad in the paper to attract someone that is not referred to me, I thought I would give you a quick call and offer my time to people you know who might need my help.  Who is the next person you know who is most likely to need my services right now?”

Tip #3: Create & Maintain a Facebook Fan Page

Did you know that Facebook now directs more online users that Google?  Facebook fan pages allow you to get your message, brand or product to more people, faster, cheaper and easier than ever before.

It doesn’t cost anything to create a Facebook fan page.  The main advantages to having a fan page instead of only having a regular personal Facebook page is that:

1.      You aren’t limited to how many fans you can have

2.      You can advertise your business

You want to include Facebook as part of your marketing plan in a way that attracts more clients instead of just creating more busy work for yourself.  In order to do that, provide your fans with regular updates that they enjoy, even something as simple as a funny or inspiring quote.  Don’t bombard them with sales pitches or they will “unlike” you.  Offer new fans a special gift or bonus that leads them into your sales funnel.

  4. Skip the promotion in your blogs – people read blogs to be educated , to learn something , to get an answer to their questions and give them useful tips they can implement straight away. Tell me a little about you , your lifestyle and what you are passionate about? I was born and live in London UK, I am an independent mother to my son who fills my life with so much joy. I love people, I am a stand for humanity and really into spirituality. I spend most my free time chillin with friends, socialising, having inspiring conversations & just having fun. I find it fun to take on challenges that has me be fearless and expands my growth, so I am a sucker to anyone daring me to do something.. with integrity of course. What lead you to making the decision of creating your own business? The stress of working the 9-5 as a single mother led me to suffer from depression so I knew there had to be another way where I could work in hours that suited me. I knew I had to take responsibility to create the way I live my life around my son as he and my health meant more to me than any job that dictated my time. Obviously I had to make money somehow so thats when I started my entrepreneurial journey.

Yes I always knew deep down there was something more, I would often question what was life about, I would watch others on the train looking miserable, I would often ask my boss questions about how he got into business. When I left my job I had no idea what I was going to do, so I just done something that I always knew to do and enjoyed to do from childhood and that was dance. I would never of guessed prior to leaving my job that I would be able to make a business from what was then and had always been just a hobby. I carried a limited belief for years that “there was no money in dance” which is too funny looking back at it now.

What did/do you find to be the most challenging part of your business? Letting go in order to expand and move forward. For years I created a job for  myself and it wasn’t until I let go and created opportunity for others did I see the light and the potential of how far I could take it. At first letting go was difficult for me as I was so attached, getting stuck into comfort zones and had lack of knowledge, focus and vision but now I build into the projects plan how I can systemize it in a way so I can let go before I even consider taking it on as a project so I can focus onto creating other business ideas.

What have you learned about yourself during the process of setting up your business? That I am fully responsible for creating it.. so therefore if something is not getting done or I am not moving at a speed I would like to be then I am blocking it somehow. Theres something internally that is holding me back. So its crucial to work on personal growth to breakthrough any limitations so you don’t self sabotage your own success & delay the process.

What advice would you give someone considering starting their own business? Go and do The Landmark Forum or a similar transformational personal development course to get empowered, stay in the positive mindset by reading books, attending seminars, surround yourself with a successful community who support you, stay committed to being educated about your expertise and your industry, consider a mentor or coach or business network community to hold you to account, share knowledge and business building strategies, and embrace the world of marketing with love. Keep chasing the dream…. and don’t listen to the naysayers.
